What has changed in your workplace?

Workplaces can gradually change without anyone noticing. Personal heaters, air fresheners, shared food, additional electrical equipment, and seasonal decorations may seem harmless, but over time they can introduce new health and safety risks. This is especially relevant in the run-up to the holiday season when decorative lighting, festive displays, and workplace celebrations become more common. While these can create a positive atmosphere, they should not compromise safety.

What is safe for one employee may affect another. For example, personal electrical items can increase fire risk, fragrances may trigger allergies, and decorations can obstruct signage, detectors, or escape routes.

The goal is not to remove everything that makes the workplace enjoyable. A positive workplace culture and employee wellbeing are important, but comfort and safety should work together.

Can you spot the simple changes?

A simple walk-through with a fresh pair of eyes can often identify issues that have become accepted over time. Small changes may seem insignificant individually, but their combined impact can significantly alter workplace risk.

When was the last time you reviewed what has been brought into, added to, or changed within your workplace? A fresh pair of eyes can often spot risks that have become part of everyday working life before they lead to an incident.
