Established by the United Nations in 1985, this act of giving has become key to our society, where volunteering is deeply woven into the social fabric.
The UK has a proud tradition of voluntary service. From community food banks and charity shops to environmental conservation projects and youth mentoring programs, volunteers form the backbone of countless organisations. Recent figures suggest that millions of Britons donate their time regularly, contributing an estimated economic value of billions of pounds annually to society. These aren’t just statistics - they represent real people making tangible differences in their communities.
This day serves multiple purposes in the UK. It’s a moment to thank those who already volunteer, recognising that their efforts often go unseen despite being invaluable. It’s also a call to action, encouraging others to consider how they might contribute their skills, time, or passion to causes they care about. At Assurity Consulting, we are proud to say that all our employees can spend one paid day per year, volunteering and taking the time to ‘Make a Difference.’
This year we have seen our teams supporting local charities and schools, giving what we can back. Beyond helping others, volunteers frequently report improved mental wellbeing, expanded social networks, and the development of new skills that can enhance employability. For many, volunteering provides a sense of purpose and connection that enriches their own lives as much as it benefits others. It’s certainly something we are very passionate about and are committed to continuing to help our local communities.
As the UK faces ongoing social challenges, from loneliness among the elderly to environmental concerns, the role of volunteers becomes more critical. International Volunteer Day reminds us that positive change often begins not with grand gestures, but with individuals choosing to show up, give their time, and make a difference where they can. As the 2025 theme suggests, “Every Contribution Matters.”
