Manufacturing company fined after worker was injured

Reading Crown Court heard how a worker was attempting to resolve a problem with a laminating machine when his arm became trapped between two mechanical rollers. He sustained fractures to his upper and lower left arm, as well as significant muscle and nerve damage. He was freed by his colleagues before emergency services arrived.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) into the incident which occurred in October 2013 found that there was no suitable risk assessment for the laminating machine, nor were there adequate measures to prevent access to dangerous moving parts.

Selig (UK) Limited, of Ajax Avenue, Slough, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), and Regulation 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, and was fined £240,000 and ordered to pay costs of £9,232.
