These are The Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, which came into force on the 1st January 2017.

For those of you who may be affected by these regulations, the most important factor is the changes in the notification process for all work with ionising radiation. The HSE have produced a new online form with a graded approach:

  • notification required for the lowest risk work;
  • registration for medium risk activities (such as use of x-ray equipment); and
  • consent required for higher risk activities (such as deliberate administration of radioactive substances for specific medical or veterinary purposes).

If any of the above applies to you, your work must be registered with the HSE by the 5th February 2018. The application process must be completed even if you have notified under the previous regulations. For further information on the new regulations, a draft Approved Code of Practice is available for free download from the HSE’s website (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/books/l121.htm).
