Gauze for thought – HSE issues warning over asbestos containing mats
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have recently released information indicating schools – as well as potentially other users - have been supplied with metal gauze mats (typically used on tripods over Bunsen burners) which contain asbestos.
These mats are believed to have been supplied by two companies and while the HSE have said “steps have been taken to prevent further supply by the suppliers identified so far” there is action you need to be taking if your organisation has or uses this equipment. The HSE are advising:
- Any gauzes that contain asbestos should not be used, and they must be safely disposed of as asbestos waste.
- As a precaution, if you are unclear as to what any gauze coating is made of then you should assume that it contains asbestos.
