On Saturday 9th June 2018, St Catherine’s Hospice held their annual Midnight Walk. Over 1000 men, women and children walked 7, 13 or 20 miles under the stars!
St Catherine's Hospice is a fantastic charity. They are local to us and they have a big ambition: to help everyone face death, keeping them informed, supported and pain free. They provide expert hospice care and are there for people in West Sussex and East Surrey when life comes full circle. They also pioneer standards in end of life care through collaboration, research and training, reaching even more people facing death and bereavement.
The hospice is one of Assurity Consulting’s charity partners and in support of them again, for the third year running, we entered a team of four to take on the 7 mile route. Heather, Dave, Kirsty and Vivienne were the team set for the challenge. They each received an orange St Catherine’s t-shirt and a fundraising pack before the event. A target of £300 was decided and the team set off to get sponsors from family and friends.
On the night, the team arrived at 9.00pm at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in their oranges t-shirts ready to be registered.
Kirsty commented on the evening, “When we arrived at Broadbridge Heath leisure centre, we were greeted by a sea of people, many of whom were in fancy dress. We had to wait around for quite a while, which was frustrating as we just wanted to start walking! When we finally went out to the start line, the Horsham Rock Choir was singing and we all took part in an aerobics session to warm us up.
At 10pm, the first wave of people moved off, high-fiving members of staff from St Catherine’s Hospice along the way. Despite our bodies telling us that we should really be in bed, we all thoroughly enjoyed the walk. There was a lovely atmosphere, with members of the public giving their support as we passed them. There was an opportunity to light a candle for lost loved ones in St John’s Church in Broadbridge Heath. There were marshals along the route cheering us on and there was even a drinks and sweets station to give us a much needed sugar boost.
When we crossed the finish line, we were high-fived by the CEO of St Catherine’s and given a medal and glass of bubbly! If you fancy a challenge next year, there is the option of a 7, 13 or 20 mile walk. It is a very heart-warming experience and highly recommended.”
The whole night has so far raised a total of £157,000 and counting. The Assurity Consulting team beat their fundraising target and raised a fantastic £530 collectively. It’s not too late to donate and you can do so here – https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/acmidnightwalk
