On Saturday 10th June, St Catherine’s Hospice held their annual Midnight Walk. This year they were celebrating the 10th year of this amazing event and had a target of £90,000 to raise. With 900 in attendance and the inclusion of men and children, this was up a staggering 600 from last year!
St Catherine's Hospice is a fantastic charity. They are local to us and they have a big ambition: to help everyone face death, keeping them informed, supported and pain free. They provide expert hospice care and are there for people in West Sussex and East Surrey when life comes full circle. They also pioneer standards in end of life care through collaboration, research and training, reaching even more people facing death and bereavement.
The hospice is one of Assurity Consulting’s charity partners and in support of them again, for the second year running, we entered a team of five to take on the 7 mile route. Lara Batley, Heather Martin, Dave Martin, Debbie Sahota and Jasmine Sahota were the team set for the challenge. They each received an orange St Catherine’s t-shirt and a fundraising pack before the event.
A target of £400 was decided and the team set off to get sponsors from family and friends. Debbie went the extra mile and came up with some fantastic fundraising ideas. Supported by the rest of the team, she created an Indian meal deal menu and sold orders around the office. This was a hit and 18 orders of £10 each were received. The food was delivered to employees at the end of the day on a Friday. Customer Administration Coordinator, Gini Dack supported this on the day and brought in homemade banana bread to sell alongside it. On another Friday, Debbie also brought in homemade samosas and sold them at £1 each, to contribute to the fundraising efforts.
On the night of the event the sky was clear and it was really quite warm! The team arrived at 9.00pm at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in their oranges t-shirts ready to be registered. The registration hall was packed! At registration each participant received a small St Catherine’s drawstring goodie bag with a map of the route, a small bottle of water, a reflector wristband and a bar of chocolate inside.
After registration, the team made their way to the start line where Horsham Rock Choir were singing hits to get the crowd raring to go! After a quick ‘clubbercise’ warm up, the mass of walkers set off at 10.00pm.
There were 3 routes of 20 miles, 13 miles and 7 miles. The 20 milers set off at 8.00pm and the 7 and 13 milers set off at 10.00pm. The routes were planned so that each route would cross over with one another at some point during the walks.
The Assurity Consulting team kept up a good pace and completed their route in just over 2 hours. After photos at the finish line and receiving medals, bacon rolls and massages it was time to head home!
Lara Batley, Marketing Coordinator commented “It truly was a fantastic event with spirits high and the team nattering their way around the 7 mile route. We smashed our fundraising goal and have currently raised over £500 with more donations to be collected!” Well done team!
