This was the second year running they had entered and with the name AssurityShank Redemption and a team dressed as prisoners in orange jumpsuits they were set to beat their 4th place running last year.
Whilst the day started off dry, by 11.00am the rain came down and did not stop for the rest of the event. The team did not let this dampen their spirits and they gave each race their all. The day started off with a safety briefing, making sure each team member understood how to partake in each race safely. AssurityShank Redemption’s first race was the second one of the day so they were racing pretty swiftly. Before each race the team lined up next to their competitors and were allocated a boat. They then had to row quite a way to the start line, giving them a chance to hone in their technique.
The team came a respectable 2nd in the first heat, with a time of 1 minute 10 seconds. The team learnt from this and with a few position swaps by the third heat they had come 1st with an improved time of 1 minute 3 seconds. Between each race the team refuelled with food and drink and tried to squeeze as many of them into their team gazebo as possible to keep dry!
As their timing had dramatically improved team AssurityShank Redemption made it into the final! The final took place at 5.00pm and was against five other teams; Beemer, Terry’s Paddlers, Forza Doors, The Hawth and Outdoor Military Fitness. The atmosphere was tense, with all teams slightly tired but still raring to go. The team put in all their effort, and rowed in sync as fast as they could go. Their efforts paid off and the team came in at second place with an amazing time of 1 minute. This was one second above first place, Terry’s paddlers, who came in at 59 seconds. The team were awarded a trophy which has been put up in pride of place in the office!
Albeit the fun day that the team had, the main reason the event was held was in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice. St Catherine's is an amazing local charity with a big ambition: to help everyone face death informed, supported and pain free. Providing expert hospice care, they're there for people in West Sussex and East Surrey when life comes full circle. St Catherine’s is one of Assurity Consulting’s charity partners and, on top of coming second, team AssurityShank Redemption raised a whopping £1175. This money will all go towards supporting the patients of the charity. Assurity Consulting look forward to continue supporting St Catherine’s Hospice in the future.
