Horsham Lions Swimarathon Record Breakers
Assurity Consulting sponsored the Horsham Lions Swimarathon that took place on a drizzly Sunday afternoon on the 12th March at the Pavillions in the Park in Horsham.
The event was raising money for Chestnut Tree House and other local charities. Darren Lloyd, IT Supervisor from Assurity Consulting, was the captain for his daughter’s team, from Worthing Swimming Club, the Doggy Paddlers who entered the event on behalf of the company. Additionally Clare Waters, Business Support Coordinator from Assurity Consulting, led team Bluebelles which included her 8 year old daughter.
The first race began at 1pm but we arrived early to set up our stand in the foyer of the leisure centre. Representatives from both Horsham Lions and Chestnut Tree House did the same and we introduced ourselves to those we hadn’t met before. The Pavillions was busy and got even busier as it neared to the first race as the first teams began arriving for registration. Just before the race began we went up to the spectators area to watch the commentator introduce the event and introduce us and Chestnut Tree House.
The hooter sounded and the first swimmers were off! It was great to see the teams swimming as fast as they could to try and complete as many lengths as possible within the 55 minute slot. The entrants ranged massively in age from young children to adults and the event was accessible to everyone with teams with disabilities entering too. This didn’t stop them from being competitive with one another and each team tried their hardest.
After each swimming slot an awards ceremony took place. A representative from Chestnut Tree House and Assurity Consulting awarded each swimmer with a medal and posed for a photo with each team. The swimmers, especially the children, seemed proud with their medals and it was a nice memento for them to take away and remember the day.
The event had four 55 minute slots and we divided our time between running the stand, watching the swimmers and awarding the medals! The event was well organised and the atmosphere was amazing with music playing throughout. There were a lot of family and friends in attendance cheering on the teams and David on the microphone did a great job of getting everyone involved.
Team Bluebelles raced at 2pm and achieved a collective total of 103 lengths. A great total and one to be proud of especially as half the team were aged 8 or 9!
Team Doggy Paddlers raced in the 4pm slot and we got a group shot of the team in front of our stand before they began. 10 minutes into their swim, Darren (the team captain) was told that there was a record of 187 lengths for this event. He briefed the team and that was it, they were fired up and really went for it. It was clear to see how talented the team were and it created a buzz at poolside. 45 minutes later, they finished their set on 194 lengths and became the new record holders!
The team were overjoyed at what they had achieved and collected their medals after the slot. Darren even treated the team to Easter eggs! Chestnut Tree House was the chosen charity for this event and each team pledged to give at least half of their fundraising to them. The rest could be given to charities of their choice. Lara Batley, Marketing Coordinator from Assurity Consulting, attended the event and quoted “The event was so much fun and was for a great cause. We decided to donate 100% off our fundraising to the charity as they are one of our charity partners. The fundraising went better than we could have ever imagined as our target was £500 but at the closing event our Just Giving page had reached a whopping £1107! Thank you to everyone who donated and to our amazing swimmers for smashing the record!”
