First two firms sign up to RHI

Two companies, an umbrella supplier from Sheffield and a group of holiday cottages in Yorkshire, are the first to take advantage of the new Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

After installing low-carbon heat-generating equipment, the companies will receive payments for each and every kilowatt-hour of heat they generate during the next 20 years.

The Government launched the RHI on 28th November 2011. It is a flagship scheme that encourages a wider uptake of renewable heating technologies such as biomass boilers, ground- and air-source heat pumps and solar thermal panels. It is expected to provide £860 million in subsidies.

The first phase of the renewable heat incentive puts focus on non-domestic installation of equipment. This gives organisations the opportunity to benefit from payments of between 1.9p-8.5p per kWh for investing in renewable heating technologies.

The government is set to extend to domestic payments under the scheme alongside the Green Deal in October 2012.
